How Fast Do Essential Oils Work

The power of essential oils is so incredible. In my personal use and in my yoga business I see this over and over.  A simple sniff of an essential oil can quickly bring a desired benefit.

A few of my yoga students that have traumatic brain injuries have had great response to essential oils.  The use if citrus oils such as lime, wild orange and grapefruit have been remarkably with focus and attention.  They also bring about some great opportunities to trigger memories of scents and cognitive links to their past memories.

SPRING TIME INTENTIONS

Dear Friends,
     Happy Spring! The new season is happening as I see the first signs of green popping up! It is such a great season to notice Life.

I have been teaching yoga for over twelve years in the community, but in 2011, I decided to create the vision that has become known as Embracing Spirit Yoga. I am so blessed to share Yoga with people of ALL abilities in the community and in my home.  I am SO proud of a recent news article that highlighted my work. I continue to find a new pace of living and a new passion for teaching beyond yoga. I am exploring and sharing a variety of wellness techniques in my personal practice and life.  I am reminded that what I experience and what sometimes life gives us, is exactly what we need in order to fully blossom.

As we enter into April, we are reminded of the cycles of life that exist in all forms. This is a beautiful time to look to at nature for lesson and to welcome your own time of growth.  Spring time is a great time to scatter seeds within yourself to create the beautiful blossoms in your life that you desire. Taking time to notice the changes around you as you see the trees begin to bud, the crocus flowers pop open and the bright yellow daffodils smile at you.  This is a great way to bring awareness of the growth that surrounds you. Simply noticing, and then cultivating growth within yourself will do wonders as you blossom this season.

Some great ideas for personal growth include increasing tolerance, having patience, loving yourself more, laughing daily, or slowing down to enjoy life. Once you set your intention and scatter your seeds, it is time to nurture these powerful thoughts and water them with love and tenderness. Keeping weeds away through positive thoughts and affirmations are a sure way to have a great harvest in the coming months.

What seeds will you scatter this season? I am planning to plant seeds of intention and touching lives through service.

DIY deodorant

Just how amazing is this 30ml roller filled with DIY deodorant!? It is common knowledge that traditional deodorant contains some really nasty things. I have been on the hunt for a good recipe for DIY deodorant using essential oils for quite some time and I think I hit the jackpot!

Here is my recipe for a jumbo 30ml roller:

  • 20 drops lemon
  • 20 drops melaleuca
  • 20 drops lemongrass
  • 10 drops patchouli
  • 10 drops Whisper blend

I am sure you can substitute other oils of your preference but the lemon, lemongrass and melaleuca are key to keeping the stink away.

Quality versus Quantity

I know that when I first started using EO I was super heavy handed, thinking that if this works so good then even more drops would work better. NOT TRUE.

When you use quality essential oils (uhh..you all know my preferred brand), you literally can use just a drop or two.

I have heard from people who have used store bought oils (I did too for YEARS), and even other popular brands, and didn’t have the results they were hoping for.

Meditation and Essential Oils

Feeling stressed and overwhelmed? Meditation can calm the body, mind, and spirit. It can help us to connect more deeply with the worlds around and within us. It has been shown to have physical health benefits including lower heart rate and lower levels of stress. But sometimes, life’s distractions and our busy thoughts can make a meditation session challenging.

I love that essential oils may provide assistance with meditation. I know for me, I am continuing to practice stilling my mind, observing my breath and just learning to BE.

Aroma and fragrances have been an important part of rituals and meditations for ages in many cultures around the world.  In our super fast-paced and distracting world, sometimes we can use all the help we can get.

To use essential oils while meditating, there are several options: You can apply directly to the body–the space between your eye brows known as the third eye is a great option or your heart. You can also create a mist by putting oils and water into a small spray bottle  and spray the fragrance in the air, or you can use a diffuser. I really enjoy applying oils.

Here are my top 5 essential oils for meditation.

1. Frankincense: A holy fragrance if there ever was one, it’s believed to help you increase your faith and connection with spirit.

2. Myrrh: One of the highest sesquiterpene contents in an essential oil, myrrh directly stimulates the hypothalamus, pituitary and amygdalin glands to help reduce stress and bring focus. It’s uplifting scent can assist in deep spiritual “opening” while bringing calm and tranquility.

3. Cedarwood: Focus inward a bit more clearly with the help of cedarwood. It can also help to illuminate your need for meditation and return you to your spiritual path when obstacles have made it difficult.

4. Sandalwood: This oil is very helpful in healing, particularly emotional/spiritual wounds. It opens the heart and helps to promote trust.

5. Neroli: The potent floral fragrance of neroli can help you to be more self-accepting, face your fears and accept the work you need to do for yourself. It can also inspire creativity, particularly as it pertains to a spiritual practice.

The Brain and Essential Oils

Are you curious how oils work in the brain?

The brain has a blood brain barrier that is the filtering mechanism between that and circulating blood. The barrier prevents substances from reaching the brain tissue and causing damage. The ability to cross the blood brain barrier is imperative for treatment of brain related issues.

Essential oils have chemical constituents call sesquiterpenes which are known to be able to go beyond the blood-brain barrier. Sesquiterpenes can directly interact with brain cells and impact the brain therapeutically. They are also known to interact with neurotransmitter receptors, especially dopamine–the reward center and serotonin–the mood regulator.

Some oils high in sesquiterpenes are frankincense, copiaba, patchouli, cedarwood, and sandalwood. Sesquiterpenes are antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, and they deliver oxygen rich molecules to the brain cells!
