Diluting Essential Oils


I used to think… “no dilution for me… I want my oils full strength”. Boy was I wrong!

Did you know that when diluted even a little, your amazing oils are even MORE effective?!

It’s true!

Less evaporation … (aka flash off)

Quality versus Quantity

I know that when I first started using EO I was super heavy handed, thinking that if this works so good then even more drops would work better. NOT TRUE.

When you use quality essential oils (uhh..you all know my preferred brand), you literally can use just a drop or two.

I have heard from people who have used store bought oils (I did too for YEARS), and even other popular brands, and didn’t have the results they were hoping for.

Say No to Synthetic

Friends don’t let Friends Use SYNTHETIC Fragrances!

I used to LOVE my scented candles, my bath products, and my room sprays…. even my “cheap” essential oils!

But I was soooo sick! I literally had no idea that my fatigue, immune challenges and overall well-being may have been triggered by the toxins in my home.

More On the Brain

The other day I made a post about how essential oils affect the brain and I wanted to continue on that post today. Another way that essential oils affect the brain is through our smell receptors that travel up to the olfactory bulb. These smell receptors make direct links to the limbic system, a complex system of nerves and networks in the brain.

The limbic system connects to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, hormone balance, emotion, and mood. Different chemicals in odor molecules cause different nerve impulses to be sent

Depending on the type and amount of essential oils used, different body reactions can occur. Certain essential oils trigger the brain to release specific neurochemicals such as endorphins, serotonin, and enkephalin. These substances reduce pain and inflammation, calm and relax the body, and create a feeling of well-being. This is why essential oils can be so helpful when using them aromatically!

You can use essential oils aromatically by just adding a few drops to your diffuser with water or you can breathe in the aroma out of cupped hands or from the bottle. You can add 1-3 drops to a tissue or cotton ball & inhale, and you can also wear oils as perfume or in diffuser necklaces to get the aromatic benefits!

The Brain and Essential Oils

Are you curious how oils work in the brain?

The brain has a blood brain barrier that is the filtering mechanism between that and circulating blood. The barrier prevents substances from reaching the brain tissue and causing damage. The ability to cross the blood brain barrier is imperative for treatment of brain related issues.

Essential oils have chemical constituents call sesquiterpenes which are known to be able to go beyond the blood-brain barrier. Sesquiterpenes can directly interact with brain cells and impact the brain therapeutically. They are also known to interact with neurotransmitter receptors, especially dopamine–the reward center and serotonin–the mood regulator.

Some oils high in sesquiterpenes are frankincense, copiaba, patchouli, cedarwood, and sandalwood. Sesquiterpenes are antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, and they deliver oxygen rich molecules to the brain cells!

Removing Toxins Naturally

Week Four–Reduce Toxic Load
Over time our bodies can take on pollutants from everyday life–medications, pollution, toxins, etc. Using natural cleaners and eating whole foods is one way to reduce them in your home but our bodies may need their own cleaning out as well.

Week Two–Exercise

Week Two—Exercise
Last week we explored nutrition, and I do believe wholeheartedly that nutrition is the foundation of healthy weight. When I see people at the gym I teach yoga at frantically racing on the elliptical and then eating a heavy amount of carbs following, I just cry for them because I know first hand that it starts with food. Three hip surgeries in 15 months forced me to tighten up my nutrition because I was forced to move a lot less. With that, I have maintained my weight. However, exercise is not just about losing weight!
Exercise strengthens the muscle and supports the heart, circulatory, and lymphatic systems, among other crucial benefits. Exercise can be anything from walking to running or taking group exercise classes and yoga. Essential oils support greater focus as well as ease feelings of tension in the body to help you stay active and strong.
Last week we also talked about some habits I switched up in my life to break unhealthy habits and to help develop new habits. When I began my healthy lifestyle I did not have a gym membership (that came later and it had its own set of positives and negatives).
Instead, I chose to walk 30 minutes twice per day. This habit remains, except because of hip surgery I am only allowed one walk per day.
Walking outside–for me–gives me a chance to hit a reset button in my mind/body/spirit. I used to worry/obsess on distance but really I have come to know that enjoying what you are doing is the key. For me, as the obsession over distance or speed crept up into the forefront of my intention, I was leaking the simple joy of breathing and being alive with all that surrounds me—even if my walk was in my neighborhood.
